Rapid City’s Legal and Finance Committee voted to advance more than $44 million in Vision Fund support for a major expansion at Rapid City Regional Airport.
The funding would help back bonds for the airport’s $100 million terminal expansion, a project that includes adding five new gates to ease congestion during peak travel periods.
The expansion is designed to address gate crowding, especially in the summer when several airlines often land at the same time.
Officials hope to break ground within the next 12 to 24 months.
The airport is already halfway through phase one of its terminal improvements, which include automated baggage upgrades and expanded TSA screening areas.
The full Rapid City Council is expected to vote on the funding resolution Tuesday.
