South Dakota lawmakers on Thursday approved updated revenue estimates that will guide both the current and next state budget.
The Joint Committee on Appropriations voted first to revise the revenue forecast for the fiscal year ending June 30. A second vote set the FY27 ongoing revenue target at $2.55 billion — roughly $30 million more than Gov. Larry Rhoden proposed in December.
Republican Sen. Glen Vilhauer of Watertown, who co-chaired the revenue subcommittee, helped present the updated numbers.
Democratic Rep. Erik Muckey of Sioux Falls said it was good news.
Republican Rep. Mike Derby from Rapid City, the committee’s lead co-chair, said lawmakers could have set the target 11 million dollars higher but chose not to.
The committee voted 13-to-zero on both motions, with five members absent. Thursday was the deadline for adopting the revenue targets under legislative rules.
