During a press conference held this morning in Sioux Falls, it was announced that Smithfield Foods will relocate its existing Sioux Falls plant from the Falls Park area to Foundation Park in a project expected to cost up to $1.3 billion over three years. CEO Shane Smith said the company had reached a point where it needed major renovations or a new facility and called the move a win for both Smithfield and the city.
Gov. Larry Rhoden called it the largest business investment in state history, noting the new plant will expand processing beyond the current 20,000 hogs per day. The move also opens redevelopment opportunities at the current 80‑acre Falls Park‑adjacent site, aligning with the city’s long‑term master plan.
Sioux Falls Mayor Paul TenHaken announced T. Denny Sanford is contributing $50 million, giving the city 120 acres tied to the project. Leaders say the relocation preserves more than 3,000 jobs, protects $200 million in annual wages, and avoids the economic fallout other communities have experienced when plants closed.
Smithfield—formerly John Morrell—has operated in Sioux Falls since 1909 and says the new facility continues its century‑long relationship with the community.
