South Dakota’s drought conditions worsened this week, according to the latest U.S. Drought Monitor. About 19% of the state is in drought and another 29% is abnormally dry, reflecting continued moisture shortages.
The most significant dryness remains in southeastern, south‑central, and southwestern South Dakota, where moderate drought has expanded by more than seven percent over the past month.
A Fire Weather Watch has been issues from 11am to 6pm Tuesday as dry fuels, warm temperatures, low humidity and winds of 40-60 mph are expected to eleveate the fire weather conditions.
Forecasters say little relief is expected, with long‑range outlooks showing continued dry conditions across the Northern Plains.
