A bill aimed at covering the cost of reduced‑price school meals has been delayed in the South Dakota Legislature.
The House Appropriations Committee on Tuesday requested a fiscal note for House Bill 1082, postponing a vote on whether the measure moves forward.
HB 1082 would use general‑fund dollars to reimburse schools for students on reduced‑price meal plans.
Sponsor Rep. Kadyn Wittman, a Sioux Falls Democrat, and the state Bureau of Finance and Management estimate the annual cost at about $600,000.
Committee chair Rep. Mike Derby said the panel needs an official fiscal note from the Legislative Research Council before acting.
Support came from multiple education and health groups, including the South Dakota Education Association, American Heart Association, and Rapid City School District.
The only opposition came from the Bureau of Finance and Management, which warned the cost could exceed $600,000.
The committee will take up the bill again once the fiscal note is completed.
