The Sturgis City Council held extensive discussion Tuesday on proposed changes to its residential camping ordinance, prompted by complaints received last year.
Mayor Kevin Forrester said camping activity—especially during the motorcycle rally—has expanded in recent years, and the city needs clearer regulations. The revised ordinance creates a two‑track system:
- Private, non‑public camping at homes would be limited to two camping units or up to 10 campers for no more than 10 days per year.
- Paid or advertised camping would be allowed at owner‑occupied residences under the same limits. Anything beyond that would require a simple city permit.
City Administrator Aaron Jordan said the council will incorporate public feedback and revisit the proposal at a future meeting.
