A Rapid City man received a 15‑year suspended sentence and eight years of probation after firing a gun toward a woman and missing.
Deshawn Charging, 21, was sentenced Thursday before Judge Heidi Linngren. According to a victim impact statement, the woman said Charging struck her with a handgun and then fired a round through her car’s rear window, fracturing her chin.
Deputy State’s Attorney Emily Toms said Charging was intoxicated and showed “a quick‑tempered, violent side.” Charging pleaded guilty to aggravated assault in a deal that dismissed other charges, with prosecutors recommending local jail and probation, noting it was his first felony.
Defense attorney Matthew Rappold cited Charging’s age, lack of criminal history, and efforts to improve his life, including working toward a GED. Charging denied pistol‑whipping the victim.
Judge Linngren acknowledged Charging’s attempts to turn his life around before issuing the sentence.
