Pennington County will proceed with a nearly $3 million remodel of its former administration building at 130 Kansas City Street after commissioners unanimously approved a $2.94 million bid from SECO Construction. The total project is estimated at just over $4.1 million.
Most of the funding will come from the county’s Capital Projects 303 Bond Fund, with additional costs covered by the 911 restricted fund and a cost‑share with the City of Rapid City for police records renovations.
The building, which currently houses the State’s Attorney’s Office, will be remodeled to accommodate the Buildings and Grounds Department and the Public Defender’s Office following recent department relocations and the sale of the county’s former facility on East Saint Joseph Street.
Commissioners praised staff for reducing earlier renovation concepts that once approached $18 million tied to a now‑scrapped plan to move the Rapid City Police Department into the building. The county intends to convert the site into a Justice Center.
