Firefighters from multiple agencies responded Saturday afternoon to a structure fire along U.S. Highway 385 south of Deadwood.
The Deadwood Fire Department was dispatched at 4:18 p.m. for reports of a fire in the basement of a rural residence. First-arriving crews entered the building, located active fire, and were able to quickly knock down the flames.
Firefighters remained on scene for several hours, working inside the home to make sure the fire had not spread between the first and second floors. The structure was ventilated before crews cleared the scene.
No occupants were injured, but two domestic animals died in the fire. One firefighter received a minor injury and was treated on scene by paramedics.
The American Red Cross was called to assist the displaced homeowners.
Agencies responding included the Deadwood, Brownsville, and Lead fire departments; Lawrence County Emergency Management; the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office; Monument Health Ambulance; Montana-Dakota Utilities; and Black Hills Energy.
