According to a social media post from Mayor Jason Salamun Chick‑fil‑A is preparing to open two Rapid City restaurants in early 2027. One location is planned for Lacrosse Street in the Marshall Heights TIF district, and the other will be built on Jackson Boulevard at the former Sonic Drive‑In site.
City documents show the developer plans to construct a 4,545‑square‑foot restaurant on Jackson Boulevard and received approval for a parking variance allowing 35 spaces instead of the required 43. The Planning and Zoning Commission also noted the project includes an off‑site employee parking area and will likely increase traffic and drive‑thru queue lengths in the area.
Justin Lurk, Chick‑fil‑A’s Midwest development director, told commissioners the Rapid City sites will be locally owned and operated. He said the company chose to open two locations simultaneously to help meet expected high demand.
Chick‑fil‑A currently operates five restaurants in South Dakota. The company says each new location typically creates 80 to 120 jobs.
