Senate Bill 96 was passed on Monday. The bill, introduced at the request of Gov. Larry Rhoden, passed 20-to-14 and would let county commissions choose to add up to one-half percent (a half-cent on the dollar) to the sales tax on retail purchases.
The revenue would be dedicated to credits on owner-occupied homeowners’ county property tax bills.
Sen. Ernie Otten of Tea carried the bill on the floor and says property owners in fast-growing counties have it bad.
Sen. Taffy Howard of Rapid City voted yes — but made clear she wasn’t happy about it.
Senate Bill 96 now goes to the House.
