Investigators say the November fire at Reptile Gardens that killed nearly 100 alligators and several tortoises was electrical in origin, though the exact cause could not be determined due to the building’s collapse and the intensity of the flames.
The fire started in the southwest corner of an off-exhibit structure that housed alligators used in the park’s show and two tortoise species.
General curator Terry Phillip said staff have spent the past few months reviewing and strengthening fire‑mitigation measures and emphasized the park’s commitment to rebuilding.
Reptile Gardens is bringing in several “nuisance” alligators from eastern Texas to rebuild the alligator show, which is expected to return Memorial Day weekend. The tortoise exhibit is also being redesigned, with newly hatched red‑footed tortoises — whose eggs survived the fire — set to be featured.
Phillip said community support has been overwhelming and deeply appreciated.
Reptile Gardens reopens for the 2026 season on Saturday.
