The Joint Committee on Appropriations voted 10–6 on Wednesday to table HB 1147, which sought financial support for Feeding South Dakota. The bill originally requested $5 million, but sponsor Rep. Erik Muckey later reduced the request to $1.5 million.
Feeding South Dakota CEO Lori Dykstra led testimony in favor of the bill, saying the money would help replace lost federal funding used to buy food from local producers.
The lone opponent, Mitch Richter with the South Dakota United School Association, warned that the state is already working to meet school‑funding obligations and suggested the state should be cautious about stepping in when federal dollars are cut.
