The South Dakota Transportation Commission has approved 21 Bridge Improvement Grants totaling about $17.8 million to help preserve, rehabilitate, and replace local bridges statewide.
Transportation Secretary Joel Jundt said the grants reinforce the state’s commitment to improving transportation safety and access, noting the BIG program remains essential for local governments.
Grant recipients include Custer, Haakon, Meade, Pennington, and Lawrence Counties.
SDDOT received 71 applications totaling $97.3 million in project requests. To qualify, counties must levy a wheel tax and maintain a five‑year highway and bridge improvement plan.
Since its inception, the BIG program has awarded $201.5 million to local governments, which must provide at least a 20% match and use funds within four years.
