South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley is applauding Meta for introducing new safety measures on Instagram that will alert parents if their teen repeatedly searches for suicide‑ or self‑harm‑related content.
Jackley said the move is an important step toward protecting young people from the harmful effects of social media.
“I have supported legislation in South Dakota and nationally that is designed to help youth who are bullied or adversely impacted by what they see on social media,” Jackley said. “I applaud Meta for taking responsibility in helping protect children on its platform.”
According to Meta, parents enrolled in Instagram’s Teen Accounts program will soon receive notifications when the platform detects that their teen has repeatedly searched for terms linked to suicide or self-harm in a short period of time. Parents will also be able to access expert‑developed resources to help guide sensitive conversations with their child.
The Attorney General’s office has backed multiple legislative efforts to strengthen protections for minors online, and Jackley said the new tool adds another layer of support for families navigating social media risks.
