The Pennington County State’s Attorney’s Office handled nearly 12,000 criminal cases in 2025, according to its newly released annual report. The office prosecuted close to 2,000 felonies and more than 9,000 misdemeanors last year, while providing services to 3,849 crime victims and diverting 1,725 people from prison through alternative programs.
DUI cases saw the largest spike, with misdemeanor DUI charges jumping 74% to more than 2,000. Another 119 felony DUI cases were filed. State’s Attorney Lara Roetzel said the rise reflects intensified enforcement efforts, including designated DUI patrols and Highway Patrol checkpoints.
The report also shows increases in abuse and neglect cases, which rose from 133 to 165, and mental health commitments, up from 73 to 111.
Roetzel said the office’s wide-ranging responsibilities—from mental health hearings to high‑level felony prosecutions—underscore the complexity of its work.
Looking ahead to 2026, the office’s priorities include holding violent offenders accountable, strengthening early‑intervention efforts, and maintaining community safety. Roetzel emphasized the importance of collaboration with law enforcement and keeping staff supported in what she described as “the best work there is” in making the community safer.
