Rapid City police are investigating a shooting that occurred early Saturday after a resident reported an intruder trying to force his way into a home on the 600 block of Saint James Street.
Officers arrived around 3:25 a.m. and found a man with a single gunshot wound. He was taken to the hospital with serious but non‑life‑threatening injuries, according to police.
The resident told investigators they were awakened by loud noises and saw a man attempting to climb through a window. As the man continued trying to enter, the resident fired a shot.
Police later determined the injured man was intoxicated and had mistakenly tried to enter the wrong home, believing it belonged to someone he knew who lives next door.
According to RCPD, the shooting appears to be a justified act of home defense. Criminal charges against the intruder are pending and the investigation remains ongoing.
