South Dakota’s top Republicans are voicing strong support for President Donald Trump’s military operation against Iran, saying the strikes are necessary to curb the regime’s nuclear ambitions and growing regional threat.
Sen. Mike Rounds praised the action in a statement on X, citing Iran’s renewed nuclear activity, stronger air defenses, and development of long‑range ballistic missiles. He said the regime continues to sponsor terrorism and has shown “little interest” in diplomacy.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune also backed the strikes, saying Iran’s nuclear program, missile capabilities, and support for terror groups have long posed an “unacceptable threat” to U.S. personnel and allies. Thune said he expects senators to receive a full briefing on the operation and expressed gratitude for the troops carrying it out.
In the U.S. House, Rep. Dusty Johnson echoed support, calling Iran’s leadership “theocratic thugs” and the “world’s largest state sponsor of terror.” Johnson said Iran has repeatedly rejected diplomatic off‑ramps offered by the administration and that he is praying for the safety of service members involved in Operation Epic Fury.
The U.S. and Israel launched the joint assault Saturday, with Trump urging the Iranian people to “seize control of your destiny” as the operation aims to dismantle Iran’s military infrastructure and prevent the regime from building a nuclear weapon.
