The South Dakota House voted down a parental-rights bill Monday after a debate focused on abuse safeguards and school transparency.
The House rejected Senate Bill 190 on a 30 to 35 vote.
Supporters including Republican Rep. Heather Baxter from Rapid City.
said the bill strengthens parental rights and reinforces consent and transparency.
Republican Rep. Will Mortenson from Fort Pierre said the House should focus on outcomes, not slogans.
Rep. Terri Jorgenson, R-Rapid City, filed intent to reconsider the measure.
