A Rapid City woman is in custody after a suspicious grass fire on East North Street led police to uncover several outstanding warrants and new drug‑related charges.
Police and fire crews were called around 2:30 p.m. Monday to an area behind 128 E. North Street after witnesses reported a woman throwing items into a growing fire near nearby structures. Officers identified the suspect as 34‑year‑old Pauline Apple and found a warm lighter in her backpack.
Apple was booked into the Pennington County Jail shortly after 3:20 p.m. Records show she is facing multiple felony charges, including simple assault on a law enforcement officer, second‑degree escape, and two counts of drug possession tied to earlier parole violations and failures to appear.
The Rapid City Fire Department quickly contained the fire, preventing any damage to nearby buildings. Apple remains held on a parole detainer as investigators continue to determine the cause of the blaze.
