The South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources is now accepting applications for its latest round of community forestry grants, with a deadline of March 31, 2026.
The program is designed to help communities address local forestry needs and highlight the importance of trees and urban forests. Grant funding may be used for projects such as new tree planting, urban forest renovation, tree maintenance, creating tree ordinances or forestry management plans, establishing urban food forests, and conducting tree inventories.
To qualify, applicants must be located in areas with 20 percent tree canopy coverage or less. Guidance on measuring canopy coverage is available on the DANR website.
Communities, tribes, and nonprofit organizations are eligible, and no matching funds are required.
Applications must be submitted to DANR’s Division of Resource Conservation and Forestry by March 31.
