The Sturgis City Council took additional public comment Monday on proposed changes to the city’s camping ordinance, following strong pushback at its Feb. 17 meeting. Mayor Kevin Forrester, who has been meeting with residents in recent weeks to find a compromise, was absent due to illness.
City Administrator Aaron Jordan said staff have been revising the proposal as more residents share unique situations affected by the ordinance. Some community members asked the city to delay enforcement until after the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, but Jordan noted that doing so would leave the city operating under the current, poorly written ordinance.
Council members opted to take no action Monday, giving the mayor more time to craft a recommendation and determine whether the Ordinance Committee’s framework can be adjusted to better balance concerns.
