A bill to reimburse school meal costs for students on federally reduced‑price plans was revived in the South Dakota Senate on Thursday after being previously tabled in Appropriations. Sen. Michael Rohl used the smoke‑out rule to bring House Bill 1082 back for debate, and it will be heard Monday — the final day for Senate action.
HB 1082 would cover the 30 cents for reduced‑price breakfasts and 40 cents for lunches, affecting about 10,000 students statewide. The annual cost is estimated at $592,000. Supporters say the amount is modest and would help families; the Bureau of Finance and Management opposed the bill, warning it exposes the state to federal funding shifts.
The Appropriations Committee had tabled the bill on a 5–4 vote before Thursday’s floor maneuver revived it.
