TUESDAY EVENING UPDATE:
Firefighters continue to make progress on the Qury Fire south of Custer, holding containment lines and expanding mop‑up operations taking advantage of favorable weather conditions.
The Type 3 Interagency Incident Management Team reports the fire is now 27% contained at 9,059 acres, with 358 personnel assigned. The fire is located about two miles southeast of Custer. The cause remains under investigation.
Crews strengthened lines south of Highway 16A near Stockade Lake and continued mop‑up and repair work. Firefighters also secured areas near the Mount Coolidge Lookout in Custer State Park and along the north side of Flynn Creek Road, where burnout operations were completed Monday. With drier conditions today, crews worked to eliminate unburned “green islands” inside the perimeter.
Officials warn returning residents to drive slowly, as firefighters, heavy equipment, engines, and support vehicles remain active throughout the area. Smoke may continue to be visible.
A warmer, drier, and breezier weather pattern is expected through the rest of the week, which could increase fire activity.
Road closures remain in place on Lower French Creek Road from Highway 16A to Highway 87, as well as Hazelrodt, Glen Erin, Flynn Creek, Herbert Draw, and Highway 87 from 16A to the north boundary of Wind Cave National Park. The park itself remains open.
Repopulation has occurred across the fire area, with access limited to residents carrying an Orange Card issued by Custer County Emergency Management. Updates are available through the Custer County Sheriff’s Office.
A Temporary Flight Restriction remains over the fire.
