A fast‑moving wildfire broke out Wednesday afternoon south of Rockerville, prompting road closures and localized evacuations as crews worked to contain the flames. The Coyote Flats Fire was first reported in the 23800 block of Pebble Lane, just off Neck Yoke Road near Highway 16.
Estimates placed the fire at around 200 acres, after forward progress was stopped but not before burning in an area dotted with homes and outbuildings and prompting evacuations as several structures were threatened.
A Red Cross reception Center was opened for those in need but was closed around 8pm after displaced residents were allowed to return to their homes.
Pennington County Emergency Management announced the Go Now status was decreased to include only the area within the fire footprint. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
