David Johnson has announced he’s running for re‑election to the South Dakota Senate in District 33. The seat is currently held by Sen. Curt Voight.
Johnson, a Republican and longtime Black Hills resident, said his background as a 47‑year small‑business owner gives him insight into issues facing local employers and workers.
Johnson served in the state House from 2016–2020 and in the Senate from 2021–2024, sitting on committees including Appropriations, Veterans Affairs and Commerce. He is an Air Force veteran, a School of Mines graduate, and holds an MBA from USD. He owns a tree nursery and tree‑care business and is widely known as “The Tree Guy.”
The Republican primary is June 2, followed by the general election on Nov. 3.
