Fire crews on the Qury Fire are preparing to scale back operations as the wildfire southeast of Custer reaches 70% containment and transitions to local management on today.
The Qury Fire, which has burned 9,168 acres about two miles southeast of Custer, will move from a Type 3 Interagency Incident Management Team to a Type 4 organization under local control. According to Incident Commander Todd Hoover, last night was the final night shift for firefighters assigned to the incident.
Although the incident organization is being reduced, officials emphasize that crews will remain on the fireline in the coming days. Firefighters will continue mopping up hotspots and patrolling established control lines to ensure the perimeter holds as conditions change.
Across the incident, 190 personnel remain assigned. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
