Rapid City will implement water conservation measures beginning April 1, after officials moved the Pactola Reservoir storage condition from normal to concern because of low water levels and dry conditions.
The reservoir recently measured 47,532 acre‑feet, below the concern threshold of 48,950 acre‑feet, with little remaining snowpack and minimal precipitation in the forecast. Officials said dry soil conditions are limiting runoff into the reservoir.
Public Works Director Mike Theis said “This decision wasn’t made lightly,”, noting ongoing drought conditions and a lack of expected moisture this spring and summer.
Under the restrictions, outdoor watering is prohibited from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., with odd‑ and even‑numbered addresses allowed to water on corresponding calendar days. No watering is allowed on the 31st of any month. Manual watering with a hose or container is permitted.
The restrictions will remain in place through the end of September. City officials said this marks the second straight year of early water conservation measures.
