Rapid City has been designated a 2026 Trail Town by the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA), a national recognition of the community’s commitment to developing and maintaining trail systems.
The designation honors communities with well‑planned and connected trail networks, strong local advocacy, dedicated funding and long‑term stewardship strategies. IMBA officials say those efforts support outdoor recreation while also boosting local economies and promoting healthy, active lifestyles.
Trail systems are increasingly viewed as economic drivers, drawing visitors, supporting local businesses and improving overall quality of life. According to IMBA, the U.S. outdoor recreation economy generated $1.3 trillion in 2024 and supported 5.2 million jobs nationwide.
With the designation, Rapid City joins 28 communities across the country recognized for prioritizing trails and outdoor access.
Local leaders say the Trail Town status will help strengthen partnerships and build momentum for continued trail development in the Rapid City area.
