Rapid City Mayor Jason Salamun announced Tuesday that City Attorney Joel Landeen is departing his position after more than two decades of service to the city.
Landeen joined the City Attorney’s Office in 2004 and was appointed city attorney in 2012. Mayor Salamun thanked Landeen for his years of public service and leadership.
A report from the Rapid City Journal stated Salamun told the Journal, “It was my decision to make a change in leadership in the City Attorney’s Office,” confirming Landeen did not resign. Salamun added “I determined it was time to bring fresh perspective, renewed energy, and stronger execution to our priorities.” Salamun expressed gratitude to Landeen for his contributions and wished him the best going forward.
Deputy City Attorney Carla Cushman has been appointed Interim City Attorney, effective immediately. Cushman has worked in the City Attorney’s Office since 2012 and is a graduate of Augustana College and the University of South Dakota Knudson School of Law.
Mayor Salamun said the city will begin a search for a permanent city attorney in the near future.
