The South Dakota Board of Water and Natural Resources has approved more than $150.7 million in funding for water and waste infrastructure projects statewide, according to the Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources.
The funding includes about $133.9 million in low-interest loans—nearly $17.9 million of which will be forgiven—and approximately $16.9 million in grants. The money will support drinking water, wastewater, and solid waste projects across South Dakota.
Communities plan to use the funds for wastewater treatment upgrades, water system repairs, storm sewer improvements, landfill projects, and rural water expansions.
In the Black Hills, Custer, Hill City, and Hot Springs were awarded funding for wastewater improvements, Belle Fourche secured multiple loans for drinking water and solid waste improvements, including a new landfill cell and waterline replacements while Whitewood received assistance to offset increased project costs.
Additional funds will support feasibility studies, system connections, and other water-related initiatives. State officials said the funding comes from a mix of dedicated revenues, including inspection fees and lottery proceeds, as well as legislative appropriations.
