A group of Rapid City residents are pushing to allow backyard chickens in neighborhoods where they’re currently banned. An ordinance supported by Rapid City Hens would permit up to six hens per household, while prohibiting roosters. Chickens are now limited to agricultural land or properties of at least three acres.
Supporters point out that similar rules exist in Sioux Falls, Spearfish, and Sturgis. Ward 2 Legal and Finance Committee member Bill Evans said he plans to support the measure, citing far more positive feedback than opposition. The City Council is expected to consider the proposal Monday.
