Rapid City sales tax collections posted solid early growth in the first report of 2026, according to city officials.
January sales tax receipts totaled $6.47 million, a 4.7 percent increase over January 2025. General 2 percent sales tax collections rose 4.3 percent to just over $3.03 million and are running 3.7 percent above budget. Those funds support core city services such as police, fire, parks, recreation and libraries.
Finance Director Daniel Ainslie said the numbers follow a record-setting December and provide a positive start to the year, though one month does not establish a trend.
Tourism activity was also strong, with tourism sales tax collections up 9.4 percent compared to last January and 4.7 percent above budget.
Ainslie presented the January sales tax report at yesterdays’s Legal and Finance Committee meeting at City Hall.
