A Winter Weather Advisory and a Winter Storm Warning are in effect across much of western South Dakota, with hazardous travel conditions expected through early Saturday morning.
The National Weather Service says a Winter Weather Advisory will remain in effect until 3 a.m. MDT Saturday for the Rapid City area and surrounding plains, and the Sturgis and Piedmont foothills. Communities affected include Rapid City, Box Elder, Sturgis, Summerset, Wall, Black Hawk and Ellsworth Air Force Base.
Forecasters are calling for mixed precipitation, with 1 to 5 inches of snow and around a tenth of an inch of ice accumulation. Winds could gust up to 35 miles per hour, leading to patchy blowing snow and reduced visibility at times. Officials warn travel could be very difficult, particularly during the Friday morning and evening commutes.
Meanwhile, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect until 3 a.m. Saturday for the Northern Black Hills and Northern Foothills, including Spearfish, Lead, Deadwood, Whitewood, Saint Onge, Nemo, and nearby areas in both South Dakota and Wyoming.
In those areas, heavy mixed precipitation is expected, with 6 to 12 inches of snow possible along with a light glaze of ice. Strong winds could also lead to blowing snow and dangerous road conditions.
Officials urge motorists to use caution, allow extra travel time and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions.
