Secretary of State Monae L. Johnson announced that Toby Doeden has qualified for placement on the Republican ballot in South Dakota’s June 2, 2026, primary election for governor.
Under state law, Republican candidates for governor must submit at least 2,171 valid signatures to appear on the ballot. Johnson’s office reviewed Doeden’s nominating petitions using a random sampling process authorized by statute and determined that 79.4% of the signatures were valid. Based on that sample, the office estimated that 3,722 submitted signatures met legal requirements.
Doeden joins current Governor Larry Rhoden, South Dakota Representative Dusty Johnson and current Speaker of the House Jon Hansen as qualified for the June 2nd Republican Primary.
Meanwhile, Julian Beaudion has qualified for placement on the ballot as a Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate in South Dakota’s June 2, 2026, primary election.
To qualify for the ballot, Democratic candidates for U.S. Senate are required to submit at least 1,232 valid nominating petition signatures. The Secretary of State’s office reviewed Beaudion’s petitions using a random sampling method and determined that 90.32% of the signatures were valid. Based on the sampling, the office estimated that approximately 1,750 signatures met the requirements. At this time Beaudion is the only Democrat entered in the race. Incumbent Mike Rounds and Justin McNeal are the 2 republican candidates.
