Seven of nine businesses inspected during alcohol compliance checks in Pennington County were found to be in compliance, according to the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies conducted the compliance checks on March 21, visiting alcohol‑selling establishments that were open at the time. Two businesses were cited for selling alcohol to an underage informant.
The following businesses passed the compliance checks:
- Wall Auto Livery Convenience Store, 311 S. Blvd., Wall
- BJ’s Convenience Store/Phillips 66, 218 S. Blvd., Wall
- Common Cents Store, 207 S. Blvd., Wall
- BJ’s Country Store, 16098 Highway 1416, New Underwood
- Moe’s Bar and Grill, 415 S. A Ave., New Underwood
- Corner Bar, 524 S. A Ave., New Underwood
- The Wasta Bar, 43 C Ave., Wasta
Two Wall businesses — Red Rock Restaurant, 506 Glenn St., and Badlands Saloon and Grill, 509 Main St. — were found in violation after selling alcohol to an underage informant.
Employees at those establishments were issued citations for violating South Dakota Codified Law 35‑9‑1.1, which prohibits furnishing alcohol to individuals ages 18 to 20. The offense is a Class 2 misdemeanor, punishable by up to 30 days in jail, a $500 fine, or both.
In addition to individual citations, businesses may face administrative penalties. State law allows for fines of $1,000 for a first offense and $2,000 for a second offense. A third violation could result in the suspension or loss of a liquor or business license.
