The South Dakota Department of Corrections is expanding its partnership with the Council of State Governments Justice Center to strengthen rehabilitation efforts and improve parole supervision statewide.
DOC officials announced a $160,000 contract with CSG to support the Governor’s Correctional Rehabilitation Task Force through March 2027. The agreement funds assessments of inmate programming and reentry services, development of final recommendations and efforts to put those recommendations into action.
The initiative also includes a new “Smarter Supervision Initiative,” aimed at improving parole oversight through enhanced data reporting, stronger community partnerships and additional training for parole agents. Phase one is complete with the submission of a federal grant application seeking nearly $892,000 from the U.S. Bureau of Justice Assistance. Gov. Larry Rhoden and Lt. Gov. Tony Venhuizen submitted letters of support.
State officials say the effort builds on broader corrections reforms, including new treatment programs, vocational training and prison expansion, with the goal of reducing recidivism and improving public safety.
