A hearing on a proposed exploratory uranium search in the Black Hills has been postponed, with no new date announced.
The project drew strong opposition during a January hearing, where critics warned the exploration could threaten ancient Native American rock art sites. Tensions ran high during that meeting, including an exchange in which a board member reviewing the permit told an Oglala Lakota community organizer his goal in life “is to be a jerk.”
The postponed hearing had been scheduled for April 13. Interest in uranium exploration has increased in recent years as countries seek additional energy sources to meet rising global electricity demand.
