DEADWOOD, S.D. – Following actions by Meade and Pennington counties, Lawrence County commissioners are considering whether to adopt a new sales tax aimed at reducing owner-occupied property taxes and may ask voters to decide the issue.
Commissioner Eric Jennings said the proposal would shift a portion of the tax burden by increasing local sales tax revenue, which could then be used to offset property taxes paid by homeowners. He noted that property taxes primarily fund local governments and schools, while sales taxes support a variety of state programs.
Meade and Pennington counties have already approved ordinances implementing the sales tax, prompting Lawrence County officials to examine how a similar measure could affect residents and local government finances.
Commissioners are expected to continue discussions on the proposal and consider placing the question before voters as communities across western South Dakota look for ways to address rising property tax concerns.
