President Donald Trump said the United States will remove tariffs on Irish whiskey, making the announcement during the Irish Open trophy ceremony at his golf course in Doonbeg, Ireland.
CNN reported that Trump said the issue had been raised with him by several people, including Irish Taoiseach Micheál Martin and tournament winner Shane Lowry. The announcement came near the end of Trump’s visit to Ireland and was welcomed by the crowd attending the event.
Irish whiskey had been affected by U.S. tariffs applied to imports from the European Union. Spirits from the United Kingdom, including Scotch whisky and products from Northern Ireland, had previously received tariff relief.
Trump did not provide a specific timetable for when the change would take effect. The announcement adds a new element to ongoing trade discussions between the United States and European partners.
His visit to Ireland also included meetings with Irish political leaders and appearances connected to the Irish Open.
