The heatwave that began last Saturday is creating hazardous driving conditions across western South Dakota, with transportation officials warning motorists to watch for slick spots and potential pavement buckling on area roadways.
As temperatures climb, concrete pavement expands. When the expanding concrete has nowhere to go, sections of roadway can buckle, creating sudden raised areas that pose a danger to motorists traveling at highway speeds.
The South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) has also issued a warning for motorists traveling on U.S. Highway 385 between Pactola Lake and Sheridan Lake. Officials say the oil blotter applied to the roadway is softening in the extreme heat, creating slick conditions.
Officials are encouraging drivers to remain alert for changing pavement conditions, reduce speeds, and allow extra stopping distance, especially during the hottest parts of the day.
Motorists can obtain the latest road condition information by dialing 511 or visiting the state’s traveler information system before heading out.
