South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley is joining a coalition of 36 attorneys general—including Minnesota’s Keith Ellison—in urging tighter safety measures on social media platforms that could endanger children. The group is calling out apps like TikTok and Instagram for features they say promote addiction and compromise youth safety.
Ellison filed a lawsuit against TikTok this week, labeling it “digital nicotine” for its addictive design and disregard for harmful effects. Jackley and others also sent a letter to Instagram, demanding stronger safeguards around its new location-sharing feature, which they warn could expose minors to risk.
Jackley emphasized the goal is not to ban social media, but to make it safer. “We want platforms where kids can connect—without being exploited,” he said.
