RAPID CITY, S.D. — A multi-agency law enforcement team in Rapid City has received the Midwest HIDTA Outstanding Overdose Investigative Effort of the Year Award for its work in a fatal fentanyl overdose case that led to the dismantling of a drug trafficking operation.
The investigation was led by the South Dakota Unified Narcotics Enforcement Team (SD UNET) and targeted individuals responsible for distributing fentanyl linked to a deadly overdose. Authorities said the case resulted in the prosecution and conviction of four defendants involved in the trafficking network.
Those convicted received federal prison sentences ranging from 20 to 30 years, removing significant fentanyl distributors from the community.
U.S. Attorney Ron Parsons praised the efforts of investigators, stating the case not only delivered justice for the overdose victim but also helped prevent additional deaths by disrupting the fentanyl supply chain.
The Midwest High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) program coordinates law enforcement efforts across seven Midwestern states to combat drug trafficking and related criminal activity. Officials said the award recognizes outstanding investigative work that has a significant impact on public safety and the fight against illicit drugs.
Authorities credited the success of the case to the collaboration of federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies working together to address the growing threat of fentanyl in South Dakota and the region.
