MEADE COUNTY, S.D. — Dry lightning from storms moving through Meade County Saturday sparked multiple wildfires in the Red Owl, Fairpoint, White Owl, Faith and Takini areas, keeping emergency responders busy across the region.
According to the Meade County Sheriff’s Office, the county’s 911 Communications Center was managing as many as 14 separate fire incidents at one time as crews responded to lightning-caused blazes.
Volunteer fire departments from across the area worked together to contain the fires and protect homes, property and communities. Officials praised firefighters and dispatchers for their coordinated response and resource management during the outbreak.
County officials said they are hopeful cooler temperatures and increased moisture will help reduce fire danger and improve conditions following the initial wave of lightning-sparked fires.
