PIERRE, S.D. — South Dakota Gov. Larry Rhoden won the Republican gubernatorial primary runoff on July 28, defeating businessman Toby Doeden by a wide margin and securing the GOP nomination for the November general election. Unofficial statewide results showed with all 650 precincts reporting, Rhoden received about 71% of the vote to Doeden’s 29%.
Turnout among the nearly 329,000 eligible voters was just under 36 percent with 118,012 ballots counted. The final tally showed Rhoden with 83,582 to Doden’s 34,430.
The incumbent Governor won all but 2 counties across the state while Doden outpaced the Governor by 111 votes in Fall River County and just 3 votes in Todd County.
With the runoff win, Rhoden advances to face Democratic nominee Dan Ahlers in the Nov. 3 general election.
