Pennington County officials are urging residents to remain vigilant as scammers continue to target individuals through fraudulent phone calls and emails.
The Pennington County Planning and Zoning Department has received multiple reports of emails falsely claiming to be from the department, requesting payment for various services. According to a county statement, these emails are not legitimate and should be deleted immediately.
Brittney Molitor, Director of Planning & Zoning said“We want to assure the public that our department does not send invoices via email following commission meetings,” adding “Most of our payment transactions occur in person at our office, so if you receive an email asking for payment, it’s likely a scam.”
Residents who receive suspicious emails appearing to be from the Planning and Zoning Department are advised to either delete the message or contact the department directly at (605) 394-2186 to verify its authenticity.
In a separate alert, the Pennington County Treasurer’s Office also reported scam activity. Fraudsters have been posing as representatives of a South Dakota county treasurer’s office, attempting to collect taxes over the phone.
County officials remind the public to be cautious when receiving unsolicited communications and to never provide personal or financial information unless the source is verified.
