A search and rescue mission was launched Sunday afternoon after a hiker fell ill and became separated from their group on Sunday Gulch Trail near Sylvan Lake.
Custer County Search and Rescue, along with the county sheriff and Custer State Park staff, responded around 12:40 p.m. after the hiker reportedly collapsed multiple times. A companion went for help, prompting a medical response team to head to the reported location.
However, when rescuers arrived, the hiker was no longer there. With limited cell service complicating communication, the operation shifted to a full search. Teams canvassed the trail and spoke with other hikers but initially came up empty-handed.
Eventually, the individual was found at their vehicle, having hiked back up the trail despite instructions to remain in place. Officials emphasized that leaving the location—especially while ill—was dangerous and could have worsened the situation.
The rescue concluded around 3 p.m. Authorities remind visitors that trails in the Sylvan Lake area are strenuous and best suited for experienced hikers in good health.
