JOHNSON SIDING, S.D. — Fire crews continued to make progress Sunday on the Bigly Fire, located about four miles south of Johnson Siding in the Black Hills.
As of 5 p.m. Aug. 2, the fire had been mapped at 13 acres. Firefighters spent the day strengthening containment lines, using both dozers and hand crews to secure the fire’s perimeter.
Officials said containment was expected to reach 50% by the end of the shift.
The fire was originally declared controlled — but not completely out — on July 30. When firefighters returned to check on the burn area Saturday, they found the fire had flared back up.
Crews will remain on scene to monitor conditions and conduct mop-up operations until the fire is fully contained. Local, state and federal firefighting resources continue to assist with suppression efforts.
