SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Most South Dakota hospitals earned average or above-average marks in the latest federal hospital quality ratings, but two facilities received below-average scores.
The U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ 2026 Overall Hospital Quality Star Ratings gave 2-star ratings to Avera St. Mary’s Hospital in Pierre and Huron Regional Medical Center, placing them in the below-average category.
Five South Dakota hospitals earned the top 5-star rating, up from three a year ago they include the VA Healthcare System in Sturgis.
The CMS ratings are based on factors including mortality, patient safety, readmissions, patient experience and timely, effective care.
Tim Rave, CEO of the South Dakota Association of Healthcare Organizations, said the ratings are an important benchmark but only one measure of hospital performance. Hospital leaders from Avera, Monument Health and Huron Regional said they are continuing efforts to improve patient care and outcomes, noting that some of the federal data is several years old.
No South Dakota hospital received a 1-star rating in 2026.
