BOX ELDER, S.D. — A grass fire east of Rapid City burned approximately 97 acres Friday before firefighters stopped its forward progress, according to emergency officials.
The Dry Grass Fire was reported in the 22600 block of 151st Avenue, burning east of 151st Avenue and north of Interstate 90 near Box Elder. Multiple fire departments responded to the scene as a large plume of smoke became visible from areas east of Rapid City.
No injuries or structural damage were immediately reported. The cause of the fire has not been released. The fire comes as the US Drought Monitor reports increased moderate to extreme drought conditions across the state. Most of Southwestern South Dakota including all of Lawrence, Custer and Fall River counties and western portions of Meade, Pennington, and Oglala Lakota counties are under extreme drought conditions. Officials urge residents and visitors including attendees of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally to be aware of burn bans and restrictions implemented in the affected areas.
